Kyrgyzstan: Tulpar-Köl Panorama

Skip the grueling technical climb to Peak Lenin in favor of this low-angle view of the beautiful mountain, walking up from the yurt camps of the Tulpar-Köl lakes near Osh oblast’s Sary-Mogol.

This very easy non-technical walk ends with big views of 7,134m Peak Lenin and the massive sister peaks that surround it. Expect a little elevation, and a steep scramble at the end to pick up a high viewpoint, but it’s quick enough that one could do it as a daytrip out from Sary-Mogol with a car.

Starting from the 6 or 8 yurt camps beyond Tulpar-Köl lake, follow the main road until it dead ends and then look for a walking path that runs a little to the east down into a small stream, crossing and climbing up the far side of the gully. This is the last reasonably-clean water, so fill up here if you’ve not packed full bottles from the start.

The trail onwards runs parallel to the Achik Tash river, slowly gaining elevation over a couple of kilometers, starting with views across the river to the Achik Tash plain (location of the Peak Lenin base camps for climbers intending to head up to the peak itself) and the quickly growing more impressive as views open up towards Peak Lenin itself and the massive glaciers that fall from its flanks.

Around 3.5km from the beginning of the trek, the trail drops down a rocky hillside to cross another river gully (this one more glacier-fed and much less desirable for drinking), climbing back up to the far side and the start of the truly impressive panoramas.

On the trail to Tulpar-Köl Panorama

About six kilometers in, the most beautiful angle on Lenin and surroundings open up. This seems to be the Tulpar-Köl Panorama proper, at least as CBT posits it, but if you still have some strength left in your legs it really is worth turning up the rise due east of here to pick up some elevation for even better views.

Tulpar-Köl Panorama final viewpoint

If following the linked GPS track, ignore the southern half of the loop at the end and trace up the edge of grass and rock that the northern half of the tracked loop follows – you’ll save yourself some unnecessary and frankly unpleasant scree if you do. Climb up as far as you think worthwhile – the linked track climbs to a nice flat bit that made an excellent picnic site, but there were other promontories a little higher that should have had nice views as well.

After taking in the sweeping views for as long as you like, or as long as the weather allows, head back down the trail to Tulpar-Köl lakes and yurt camps following the same route.

Good To Know

Getting to the Tulpar-Köl Panorama

As with so many of Kyrgyzstan’s most beautiful places, no public transport goes past Sary Mogol and you’ll be reliant on hiking, hitching, or hiring a car or driver to get to Tulpar-Köl. The going rate was around $20-30 when last we visited in 2024, but as always it depends on your ability to negotiate – consider just arranging it through CBT Sary Mogol and saving yourself the hassle.

Where to Stay and Eat

CBT Sary Mogol also runs one of around a dozen yurt camps up by Tulpar Kol. Book with CBT if you need something cheap booked in advance, or just show up and ask around at the other camps if you want even cheaper and don’t mind to sort it out upon arrival. If you value comfort  over price, Pamir Nomad is really the only game on this side of the Achik Tash river, though you could also book at one of the climbing operators over in Achik Tash and hike over to the panorama from there – it’s a fairly common acclimation hike and the trail is well-worn.
